Hot Topics Call: The Making of a Commencement Program

Join moderators Kim Cummins and Jenny Kraus-Smith for a discussion about graduation/convocation programs. Jenny will discuss the main program for Washington University in St. Louis, and Kim will talk about the program used for the recognition ceremony for the McKelvey School of Engineering. What information is included? How is it determined whose names can be listed? Electronic or paper? Souvenir or throw away? Hear about the factors which influence our decisions at the university level and the school level. There will also be time for you to share your institution’s strategies and challenges.

The regional conference will focus on Commencement debrief. Debriefs produce a list of what worked, what didn’t, and what relevant people want to see at your next ceremony. However it also is a catalyst for change and innovation. The one day conference will share insights on debrief management, and properly addressing past issues and/or concerns.

Hot Topic Call: Posthumous Degrees

Moderator Kelly Carland leads a discussion on the process of awarding posthumous degrees at UCI. Kelly will share how the University of California, Irvine has gone through the process of awarding posthumous degrees in the past, some challenges with balancing a celebratory event while honoring these individuals, and share some previous experiences trying to assist the families at commencement. There will be lots of time for you to share your institution’s strategies and challenges as this will be an information gathering discussion.
